Adult Swim's Top Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Major Extension for Two More Seasons.

In October of last year, Adult Swim saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the channel unveiled a completely new animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. In an era often marked by dark humor, this show's sincerity resonated deeply and turned it into a surprise hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.

"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."

Executive Acclaim

Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming sensibility.

"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about observing this lovable family go about their simple existence.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running layer of irony. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

What Comes Next

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially be part of that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to bask in the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
