Antony Price, Celebrated for Designing for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer responsible for some of the most iconic looks associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.
His reputation was built on his defined forms and performative fashion, including the soft-colored suits that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."
His passing follows just weeks after he debuted his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "dress" once worn by Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he began designing menswear at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to merge menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in designing body-hugging looks made him a "genuine original," according to the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he started creating outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as several ensembles for her US tour after assuming the title.
After a career spanning over fifty years, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in partnership with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
