The Technology Behind the Tracking

Each model of smartwatch has its own proprietary way of monitoring your bodily functions and interpreting your data, but the vast bulk use optical sensors on the back of the watch.

They typically shine tiny, coloured LED lights onto your wrist which can detect capillary action, detecting your heartbeat. More advanced devices measure changes in the electrical current that passes over the skin to gauge your nervous system activity.

The Professional Viewpoint

One expert says that in general for smartwatches, it's a "delicate equilibrium" - while the rapidly advancing tech could potentially prevent illness, "identifying issues before we feel unwell", it could also turn us device users into the "concerned but fine".

He points out that the most advanced wearables can conduct tests like medical-grade monitoring, which continuously monitor how healthy the heart is. They can alert if someone is experiencing an irregular rhythm, where there is abnormal signals in the heart causing an irregular heartbeat.

This does not automatically signal someone is imminently going to suffer a heart attack, but it can give an preliminary indication they might be more susceptible of a blood clot in the years to come.

But how to make sense of these numbers is not straightforward. The expert worries that as additional features are added, people may struggle to fully contextualise their data.

"I have some doubts that being able to monitor so many metrics is such a positive development," he says.

"When people are presented with stats about ourselves that we lack context for then, of course, we are going to become concerned," the psychologist says. "We look, we check again - it becomes a feedback loop."
