Israeli citizens mark two-year anniversary of 7 October incident as Gaza peace negotiations advance
Israelis have come together across the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-led attack on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations proceeded in Egypt over a resolution to the hostilities in Gaza.
The assault led to in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely deadliest day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.
Israel reacted by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has taken over 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as accurate by the UN and other world agencies.
"Our violent enemies have caused great damage, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on that day.
He also promised to "accomplish all the goals of the war: the return of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will not create a danger to Israel".
Remembrance Events Across Israel
The national leadership rescheduled formal commemorations until October 16th - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still were held around the country on that day.
A commemorative event for the loved ones of Israelis killed in the Hamas attack was organized in Tel Aviv. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was aired on Israeli broadcast stations.
Hours earlier, a minute's silence was held across the country.
Negotiation Talks in Egypt
Meanwhile, both sides' delegations gathered in the Egyptian coastal city of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of mediated discussions to examine the provisions of the agreement.
A prominent delegate knowledgeable about the negotiations said that an night meeting of mediated discussions started at 7 PM local time.
The source said the earlier meeting ended without tangible results, amid differences over the proposed Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not restart hostilities after the initial stage of the agreement.
He added that the discussions are "tough and have not yet produce any significant progress," but pointed out that facilitators are making efforts to narrow the gaps between the conflicting groups.
Critical Issues in Discussions
- A permanent ceasefire
- The trade of the hostages still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
- Arrangements for humanitarian aid deliveries
- Future administration of the territory
Public Feeling
In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square earlier, 29-year-old Hagar - whose family member survived the attack on the Nova music festival, where 378 people were lost their lives and numerous more were abducted by Hamas militants - shared: "No location feels like home anymore and until all the hostages are released none of us will feel safe."
"Once we see everybody home again, we can breathe again. Then we can start to recover," she continued.
In front of the leader's official dwelling in the capital, people congregated to demonstrate their support for the loved ones of the captives. Israel says forty-eight stay in confinement in Gaza, twenty of whom are considered to be alive.
Demonstrator a participant remarked: "It's necessary do every compromise necessary for the hostages to be released. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be protected."
Surveys now regularly indicate that around the majority of Israeli citizens want the war to finish in exchange for the freedom of the captives.
Palestinian Conditions
At the area of the gathering, grieving people gathered to remember the victims.
From that location, the sound of aerial bombardments and artillery could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses said the heavy Israeli attacks continued.
In the urban center, bombardments were reported in the dawn of Tuesday in the western neighborhood, Rimal and locality neighbourhoods and in the eastern area of that sector, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.
"Once the night falls, the fear comes with it," evacuated urban resident a mother, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike last year, shared.
"My family are afraid of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are lying together, holding each other, particularly my little child who puts his face on me all night."
"Continuously we monitor the reports to see the situation. And I'm worried that this halt will not be finalized and that the fighting will resume to us."
Medical Emergency
The medical facility in Gaza City announced it had received the bodies of several people by the midday, including several who died in an Israeli bombing in the south part district.
Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of the city said two more fatalities had been delivered. An individual was lost his life by Israeli forces while looking for help to the southern area, medics said.
