Nearly 25,000 residences in southeastern Queensland found themselves without power on Monday morning after severe thunderstorms swept through the region, generating wind gusts hitting over 100 km/h.

Massive Hailstones and Widespread Destruction

Homeowners reported substantial frozen pellets as large as seven centimeters in particular locations. The Bureau of Meteorology verified that various areas across Queensland had been hit with significant hail.

Utility workers were focused on reestablishing power throughout the damaged zones, with dozens of response units activated to handle the widespread outages.

Victoria's Weather Woes

Simultaneously, around 1,000 residents in Victoria also encountered power outages after the capital city saw its heaviest rainfall in 18 months.

Emergency response teams responded to nearly 600 requests for assistance across the state, primarily for building damage but also for collapsed vegetation and water accumulation.

Most Impacted Areas

• Werribee region - experienced considerable destruction
• Hoppers Crossing suburb - multiple assistance requests
• Wyndham region - 179 calls for assistance

At one point on the previous day, in excess of 28,000 electricity consumers in the state were without power.

Climate Outlook

Damp conditions were forecast to persist along significant areas of Queensland's east this next several days as a weather pattern continued to attract humidity against the coastal areas.

Tomorrow was forecast to be the wettest day, with persistent storm activity predicted across different parts of both areas.

Safety Concern

Public health experts alerted that there was an increased chance of thunderstorm-induced asthma across the state's northern country region, especially given the existing atmospheric conditions.

This alert comes after past events where comparable situations led to major medical consequences in the state.
