Data Breach Puts Numerous at Risk

Person A, known as Person A, stated that people concerned by the security lapse were advised to change residences and change their phone numbers to ensure their safety from the Taliban.

Members of Parliament are looking into the UK government's response of a massive disclosure of personal details concerning almost nineteen thousand Afghans who had requested to move to Britain to avoid militant rule.

How the Leak Was Discovered

A data file with confidential details, including names, addresses and occasionally family information, was inadvertently disclosed by an official stationed at British military command in February 2022.

The leak was discovered only in August 2023, when the names of several individuals who had sought to move to the UK were posted on Facebook.

Regime's Resources

Many believe there's a misunderstanding that militant forces lack comparable resources that allied forces use,” she told lawmakers.

All equipment was abandoned in Afghanistan; they possess it. Should they obtain mobile details, they can locate you down to within metres. That is what specialized teams achieved.”

Under inquiry about whether the Taliban possessed advanced decryption, the source stated: “They've got everything.”

Early investigations submitted to the inquiry suggested that no fewer than forty-nine relatives and colleagues of individuals impacted by the leak had been killed.

A superinjunction about the incident was put in force in August 2023 and blocked relevant facts about it from media reporting until July 2025.

Security Recommendations

Due to legal constraints, the whistleblower and the aid group associated with advised affected households they were working with that they had “concerns that somebody's phone had been breached”.

“We recommended that they change residence where feasible and changed their phone numbers. That constituted the crucial data that, if the Taliban had access to these details, would result in them being traced,” Person A explained.

Disputed Conclusions

The whistleblower contested that internal investigation performed by an ex-government employee had been incorrect to state that the obtaining of the records by militant forces was “unlikely to substantially change present danger”.

“The crucial point is that affected people are in hiding from the Taliban; they live secretly. Everything boils down to former occupations.”

She detailed disturbing treatment experienced by at-risk Afghans, involving electrocution, waterboarding, and physical abuse.

“There are cases of four-year-old children who have had limbs fractured to try to get the family to disclose hiding places,” the whistleblower revealed.
