The Game UN:Me: A Cerebral Horror That Blends Survival Horror and Social Deduction Gameplay
The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled several intriguing future games, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"This is a unique game where a girl harboring several human souls inside her must escape from a labyrinth of the psyche," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of high school age. Within her exist four distinct souls, all possessing unique anxieties and motivations. These entities can take over at will, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.
Based on showcased footage, much of the action takes place within a eerie medical facility, while other scenes show the main character navigating a abandoned chapel.
A World of Personal Dread
"What are you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. Authority figures. Things that seem trivial to other people can activate something primal inside us. This game explores that concept — fears that are specific to every individual."
The core mechanic involves managing whichever soul emerges at any given moment. However, these souls will switch involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's fears become amplified and attack the protagonist in succession. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Fatal Choice
At first glance, UN:Me shares striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by nurses all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the lobby have large flowers growing from their heads are. Floral motifs are a recurring element, contrasting organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the souls asserts that the body belongs to them," explains a creator. "During the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
After a player believes a persona is an impostor, they must eliminate it. But, because each soul can lie or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the true [soul] by your own actions," a voice states. "The last one standing might be a fraud. Either way, your decisions are final."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
