Ultra-Conservative Former Legislator José Antonio Kast Voted In as Chile Incoming Leader.
In a decisive runoff election, ultra-conservative figure José Antonio Kast has clinched the top job in Chile.
A Commanding Triumph
After more than 99% of ballots counted, Kast won 58.17% of the votes, beating leftist contender Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.
This signifies Kast's third attempt at the presidency, having previously been lost by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 final vote.
Platform Centered On Law and Order and Migration
Recognized for his strong Catholic views and regard for the period of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's platform was largely centered on promises to tackle growing crime and radically curb immigration.
He repeatedly blamed immigrants, notably the around 330,000 unauthorized individuals in Chile, for security issues. During the election cycle, he gave an ultimatum for them to exit before the inauguration or face expulsion.

Numerous commentators interpret Kast's success as part of a wider rightward shift in the region, coming after recent political wins in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
However, other analysts also describe it as a continuation of the predictable rotation of power between left-wing and right-wing administrations since Chile's transition to democracy in 1990.
Leading Without a Solid Majority
In spite of his decisive electoral victory, Kast is not expected to have an clear majority in parliament, not in the lower house nor the Senate, even when all conservative parties are counted together.

The expert added, "In terms of fiscal matters, it is highly probable we will see spending cuts associated with the right-wing. However the area with much less ambiguity is on law and order, because that has been his central theme across the race."
